Maria Jose Roque Apolonia
Maria, age 92, passed away peacefully at the Care Home with family by her side. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Shelley, her grandson Zach, sister-in-law Maria Roque and family in Saskatoon, brother-in-law Mariano Brito and family in Portugal, and many nieces and nephews and their families in Canada and Portugal. Predeceased by her parents, her husband Jose, son Noel, brother Antonio Roque and nephew Tony Roque.
Maria was born in Quintos, Portugal later moving to Beja, Portugal where she took the Singer sewing course to become a seamstress in preparation for life in Canada. She immigrated in 1959 to reunite with her beloved husband who came to Saskatchewan in 1957. She was a very talented seamstress, took great pride in her work and loved to talk about her time at Caswells, the Farnham Block, and Nutana Tailor in Saskatoon, a business owned and operated by her. She enjoyed tailoring clothes for her family to make them fit perfectly, so you never knew they were even altered. As a teenager she learned to crochet and knit which she continued to do well into her 80’s. Both she and Jose liked gardening and sharing the harvest with their family and neighbors. Carpet bowling was another fun activity they enjoyed for many years. Maria loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with them, especially feeding them. She had three very special loves in her life – her husband, her son Noel, and her grandson Zach who she just couldn't get enough of. Maria was fortunate to live a very healthy life overall and was proud that she could stay in her own home until the last few years.
A special thank you to Bennetto Care Home who lovingly cared for Maria in her final years. Thank you also to Dr. M. Wong and previous long time physician Dr. A. Nayar.
At Maria’s request a private service and interment has taken place. Thank you to Fr. Kevin McGee and Westwood Funeral Chapel for helping us to honor Maria’s life.
